Tagging on Instagram can be very convenient and useful. However, you also have the option to untag yourself from photos, videos, and stories – if you want to. You see, Instagram (as with most social networking sites) gives its users the power to control what goes on in their accounts. And for that, we (the users) are very thankful indeed.

So, if you want to remove your name on posts that you’re tagged in, just read on. Soon you’ll be able to get yourself disassociated from unauthorized and unwanted tags. Of course, you can also keep those you want.

How to Totally Untag Yourself from Instagram Posts

Here are the steps to completely untagging (eliminating) yourself from a post:

  1. Click on the particular photo or video.
  2. Find and click on your username.
  3. For Android users, simply click on the Remove Tag option.
  4. If you’re using an iPhone, follow these additional steps:
  • Click on the More option.
  • Click on Remove Me from Post.
  • Confirm your action by clicking on Remove.

Steps to Hide Posts that You’re Tagged in

Now, if you just want to hide a particular post (photo or video) from appearing on Instagram’s feed, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Instagram app on your device.
  2. Go to your Profile.
  3. Click Photos of You.
  4. Click on the particular post that you want to hide.
  5. Click on the three dots found at the upper right-hand corner of the post.
  6. On the Menu, click on Photo Options.
  7. Click Hide From My Profile.

Notes:

  • The procedure above will not untag you from posts that you’re tagged in, but they’ll be gone from Instagram’s feed.
  • People will no longer be able to view your tagged photo.

How to Prevent Future Tagging

In the above sections, you learned how to untag and hide posts that you’re tagged in. Now, we’ll show you how to prevent future tags from other Instagram users. Basically, you can choose from 2 options for future tagging:

  1. Automatically – Photos and videos that you’re tagged in will automatically appear on your profile (this is the default setup).
  2. Manually – All tags mentioning your username will need to be approved by you before they can show up on your feed.

For this section, we’ll show you how to turn on the Manually option so that you can filter future tags.

Android users, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Instagram app.
  2. Go to your Profile.
  3. Click on Photos of You.
  4. Click on the three dots located at the upper-right corner of the photo or video.
  5. Click Tagging Options.
  6. You will be given two choices – Automatically and Manually. Choose Manually.

If you’re an iOS user, here are the steps to follow:

  1. Open the Instagram app on your device.
  2. Go to your Profile.
  3. Click on the gear icon to open the Settings menu.
  4. Click Privacy and Security.
  5. Click Photos of You.
  6. You will be given 2 options – Add Automatically or Add Manually. Choose Add Manually.

How to Store Tagged Photos on Archive

You also have the option to store your tagged photos and videos on your Archive folder. You can pick this option if you really don’t want to delete a post that you’re tagged in but want to remove it from public viewing. Here are the steps to doing this:

  1. Go to the photo or video.
  2. Click on the three dots found at the upper right-hand corner of the post.
  3. Click on Archive.

Notes:

  • With the Archive option, all likes and comments are retained on the posts.
  • Posts can stay stored in the Archive for an indefinite time (#forever).
  • Archived posts can be easily restored to their original position (place in time).

How to Restore Tagged Photos in the Archive

In cases where you want to restore archived posts, just follow these steps:

  1. Click on the clock icon located at the upper right corner of your Profile.
  2. Click on the particular post that you want to restore.
  3. Click on the three dots located at the upper right-hand corner of the photo or video.
  4. Click Show on Profile.
