How to Remove Powered by Shopify

The Shopify platform, just like most platforms (WordPress, for example) has its brand on the footer area of your site. It says “Powered by Shopify” – and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it somehow reveals a lot about your online property.

You probably think that it’s more professional-looking if such credits are removed from such platforms – and we actually agree with you. It’s simply better-looking and more independent-looking when a website doesn’t have such branding.

Well, we’re here to tell you how easy it is to remove that Powered by Shopify message on your site’s footer.

Important Things to Know About Removing Shopify’s Footer

As we said, it’s easy to remove the Powered by Shopify text from your site – however, you first need to know if you’re using a sectional or non-sectional theme (as the steps will depend on the type of theme that you’re using).

Here are the two themes:

  1. Sectional Theme – If you acquired your Shopify theme after October 2016, there’s a big chance that you’re using a sectional theme. This particular theme allows you to drag and drop elements in arranging the layout of your online store. To remove the Powered by Shopify message on a sectional theme, you’ll need to modify the footer.liquid file.
  2. Non-sectional Theme – This is an older version of a Shopify theme released before October of 2016. To remove the Powered by Shopify text on a non-sectional theme, you’ll need to modify the theme.liquid file.

Follow the steps for each type of theme below.

Steps to Removing Powered by Shopify on a Sectional Theme

  1. Open your Shopify account.
  2. Click on Admin.
  3. Click Online Store.
  4. Click Themes.
  5. Click Actions.
  6. Click Edit Code.
  7. Look for the footer.liquid file and open it.
  8. Find the footer code line. It looks something like this: {{Powered_by_Shopify}}.
  9. Delete the entire line.

Steps to Removing Powered by Shopify on a Non-Sectional Theme

  1. Open your Shopify account.
  2. Go to your Admin section.
  3. Click Online Store.
  4. Click Themes.
  5. Click Actions.
  6. Click Edit Code.
  7. Look for the theme.liquid file and open it.
  8. Find the theme code line that looks something like this {{Powered_by_Shopify}}.
  9. Delete the whole line.

Removing the Password Code on Shopify

Here are some additional steps to complete the process of removing the Powered by Shopify message on your site or online store. Do these additional steps whether you’re using a sectioned or non-sectioned theme. Otherwise, removing the footer and theme codes from the previous steps won’t take effect.

  1. Open your Shopify account.
  2. Go to your Admin section.
  3. Click Online Store.
  4. Click Themes.
  5. Click Actions.
  6. Click Edit Code.
  7. Look for the password.liquid file and open it.
  8. Find the password code line – it’s quite long but look for something that starts with <div class=shopify> and ends with </div>.
  9. Delete the entire password code line.

Removing the Powered by Shopify from Your Website

Now, look at the front-end of your online store after performing all the required actions above. The Powered by Shopify text should be gone.
