How to Create Categories in Shopify

In Shopify, you can group your products into Collections to make it easier for your customers to find them by category. Therefore, the Collection function in Shopify basically works as the Categories function in other websites like Woocommerce.

How Shopify Collection Works

Here are some things to remember when it comes to Shopify Collections:

  1. Your Collections page can display images that customers can click on to look at your products.
  2. Collections can be found on your site’s menu or navigation field. You can add links to your Collections to help your customers find specific products.
  3. The look and overall layout of your Collections page will depend on your chosen Shopify theme.
  4. Your Collections can be formatted as follows:
  • Category type – e.g. Clothes for men
  • Items type – e.g. Carpets, Lamps, Beds
  • Seasonal products – e.g. Decorations, Fashion

Shopify Collection Types

There are two types of Collections in Shopify and you can only choose one at a time. They are:

  1. Automated Collections
  2. Manual Collections

We’ll discuss both in full below.

Shopify Automated Collections

As the term suggests, setting up Automated Collections will allow the system to automatically include products that match with one another. Here are some things to remember with regards to Automated Collections:

  • You can put up to a maximum of 60 conditions.
  • You get to choose if a particular product needs to meet all the given conditions to be included in a Collection or if a few items will do.
  • New products will be automatically added to Collections based on the conditions they meet.
  • Opting for Automated Collections is a great time saver as there’s nothing else to do once you add new products.
  • The only way to remove a particular product from a Collections page is to change some of the conditions in a Collection or to tinker on the product page details instead.

Here are the steps to setting up Automated Collections:

  1. Log in to your Shopify account.
  2. Go to your Admin Page.
  3. Click Products.
  4. Click Collections.
  5. Click Create Collection.
  6. Input the title and details of the Collection.
  7. Look for the Collection Type section and click on Automated.
  8. Choose from 2 options:
  • If products need to match all conditions.
  • If any condition will do.
  1. Set conditions by looking through the drop-down menu.
  2. Click Save.
  3. Pick your desired sort order.
  4. Look for the Sales Channel section and pick the active channels where you want your Collections to be seen.
  5. Look for the Collection Image section and click Upload Image – then upload an image for the Collection.
  6. Click Save and you’re done.

Shopify Manual Collections

As you can already guess, you need to individually choose products to add them to a Collections Page. Here are some things to take note of regarding Manual Collections:

  • Collection pages will contain the same set of products unless you manually add or delete items from them.
  • Compared to Automated Collection, Manual Collection requires more time and effort in maintaining.
  • Manual Collection will work best for shops with limited items.
  • You can use Manual Collection for specific occasions such as flash sales – and simply assign discounted prices for products in a particular Collection.

Follow these steps if you want to create Manual Collection on your Shopify store:

  1. Log in to your Shopify account.
  2. Go to your Admin section.
  3. Click Products.
  4. Click Collections.
  5. Click Create Collection.
  6. Input the title and description of the particular Collection.
  7. Look for the Collection Type section and click Manual.
  8. Click Save.
  9. Go to the Products section and search for products to include in the collection. Or if you want, you can click Browse and simply add products as you see them.
  10. Pick the sorting order to display your products in the Collection.
  11. Look for the Product Availability section and pick the Sales Channels that you wish to show your Collections on.
  12. Look for the Collection Image and click Choose Image.
  13. Upload an image for your created Collection.
  14. Click Save.
